18 Volunteers Dirty Hands to Clean Up Christchurch Avon Riverbank 2008

Is it time for spring-clean? Here it is - an outdoor clean in spring, Clean Up Avon Riverbank, one of the most popular tourist attractions in Garden City.

Organised by 2Ways Company Limited on 20 September, eighteen volunteers united to Clean Up Avon Riverbank between the bridges of Remembrance and Armagh St., 80kgs (6 bags) rubbish picked up mainly including cigarette butts, plastic bags and beer bottles.

“Everyone is a part of eco-friendly Christchurch. Individual and community based action is an essential step to keep Avon riverbank clean and beautiful. We aim to raise the public awareness of what the individual can do to reduce litter.” Local event co-ordinator, Ellen Yule says, “It’s the sixth year for us to clean up the same area because of the same problem of waste along the riverbank and on the footpath which end up in drains and waterways.”

The volunteers, including New Zealand-born Kiwi, migrants from Spain, China and Thailand, and international students from Brazil and Hong Kong, chose to volunteer their time and energy to keep Christchurch beautiful.

“It allows kids to witness first hand the impact of rubbish in the environment.” Andrew, a schoolteacher set a real life lesson for his sons Connor and Liam, aged 6 and 4. Two of his students also took part in the event.

Each volunteer was rewarded by an event bookmark with a photo of Avon River. Six framed flower photos were also delivered as prizes by 2Ways Co., Ltd. The best of all the reward is the feeling of having made contribution to this pretty Garden City.

Clean Up the World originated in Australia in 1993 and is held in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The campaign involves an estimated 35 million volunteers in over 110 countries each year, bringing together community groups, schools, governments, businesses and individuals to undertake activities to improve water quality, clean up local streets, parks, waterways and forests and educate children about the environment.

> offsetting your greenhouse gas emissions

> absorb a tonne of carbon dioxide over the tree’s lifetime

> provide shade and shelter on public/community land

> noise reduction from roads

> create new forest/wetland area

> attract native bird life back into the area

We all have a responsibility to clean up the land and clear up the air. We’re doing our bit. We believe that every little bit helps, including yours. There is a lot you can do to support sustainable eco-tourism while you’re visiting New Zealand, from respecting cultural differences to limiting your impact on the local environment. Tree planting is an alternative way to offset the carbon emissions which you cannot reduce of your travel. Also you can contribute towards the local projects that will reduce the greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere on your behalf.
